May/June Issue: PRICE customers produce more competitive bids and proposals

PRICE customers produce more competitive bids, increasing the probability of winning profitable business

It is important that cost estimates supporting the final bid price have grassroots buy-in within a company. Individual leaders must believe that they can do the job proposed for the bid price. So, grassroots estimating—the practice of deriving labor, material, subcontractor, supplier, and other cost—from the people that will do the work is vital. Without a credible initial cost baseline, however, it is almost impossible to develop a cost volume that is consistent with the price-to-win.

Without a credible initial cost baseline, however, it is almost impossible to develop a cost volume that is consistent with the price-to-win. Once cost estimates are “out-of-the-box”, it is very difficult to get them back in, burdening leaders with career ending risks.TruePlanning® 2014 delivers the tools and methods needed for credible decomposition of the price-to-win into the cost target, keeping grassroots estimates “in-the-box”.

TruePlanning® 2014 maps estimates for the activities and resources of the product breakdown structure (PBS) to that of the work breakdown structure (WBS) familiar to the project leaders. With this mapping, TruePlanning’s data-driven estimating methods give individual leaders the context of measured benchmarks from which to form their estimates around a winning approach.

This persistent link between the PBS and the WBS is key to winning bid validations. Reconciling the data-driven estimates with grassroots estimates clears up any statement of work misunderstandings, exposes gaps in the estimate, mitigates risk, and gives the company the confidence of true bid validation, unifying top-down statistical estimating with bottoms-up buy-in.

Timothy S. Stanos, Principal and Co-Leader of Avascent’s Price-to-Win Practice, elaborates:
"TruePlanning is a critical element of Avascent’s Price-To-Win service offering. Furthermore, the support Avascent receives from PRICE Systems' Solutions Architects to build models, understand the nuances of various cost estimating relationships, and provide other assistance as needed is vital to our success."
