Hardware Lifecycle Project Planning & Control

TruePlanning®-Systems

TPSY01 | 2 days
Formerly True Systems: The TruePlanning Framework

The TruePlanning®-Systems catalog enables users to accurately predict the cost of project management, oversight, and integration-essential cost elements in any type of project that are typically overlooked or underestimated. TruePlanning®-Systems allows users to address the effort to manage, oversee, plan, define, control, design, integrate and test projects that contain hardware, software, and information technology equipment or any combination of these.

This two-day workshop, a pre-requisite for the other TruePlanning® catalog courses, will introduce the student to the TruePlanning® framework. Attendees will be instructed on navigating through the workspace, creating new project files, developing product breakdown structures, managing projects, getting and understanding results, customizing projects, and performing other program operations. The student will also learn how to utilize TruePlanning®-Systems to incorporate purchased goods, purchased services and other costs into their estimates.

PRICE Hardware (PRICE H)

PESHH1 | 5 days
This course is PMI-Certified; students will receive 40 PDUs upon successful completion

This five-day workshop provides an overview of parametric cost estimating methodology and instruction in the use of the PRICE Hardware Model (PRICE H). Students will learn how to develop cost estimates for the development and production phases of a hardware acquisition program.

In addition to a discussion of how to estimate the cost to design and manufacture structural, mechanical, electronic, and electro-mechanical hardware elements, the PRICE H course provides instruction in how to estimate integration (hardware, hardware-to-software, and design) and test, purchased and furnished hardware, and modified hardware. Students will also learn how to customize their estimate for specific labor and escalation rates, learning curves and manufacturing process assumptions, multiple lot and other program-specific situations. Estimate refinement through calibration of completed projects will be addressed during the course, as well as risk analysis to aid in decision-making.

PRICE Hardware Lifecycle (PRICE HL)

PESHL1 | 4 days

The cost to operate and sustain a hardware system typically exceeds the cost to develop and produce the system. Recognizing the importance of considering life cycle affordability, this four-day workshop provides attendees with a quick and easy approach to estimate the cost of supporting and maintaining hardware during its operational life cycle. The PRICE HL course will instruct students in equipment deployment input variables; employment and deployment of equipment; and supply, maintenance, and distribution concepts. Students will learn about the key operations and support cost drivers, the types and levels of maintenance, and equipment hierarchy.

Note: while there are no formal pre-requisites for this class, it is suggested that the student have a basic understanding of hardware supply and maintenance concepts.

PRICE Module and Microcircuit (PRICE M)

PESMM1 | 2 days

PRICE M from PRICE Systems is designed to provide quick and reliable cost and schedule estimates for the development and production of circuit cards, modules, custom and semi-custom developed microcircuit chips, multi-chip modules, hybrid packages, and modular electronics.

This two-day workshop introduces students to the physical attributes of modules and microcircuit chips that influence cost and schedule. Through lectures and exercises, students will learn how to estimate not only the component and substrate cost, but also the effort needed to assemble, mount and interconnect, protect, seal, and test components. The course will show how the microcircuit element in PRICE M emulates the procedures and processes involved in the design and fabrication of microcircuits, such as chip specification, circuit design and simulation, and layout. Students will also learn how to create a component database and how to integrate PRICE M into a larger hardware estimate.

TruePlanning®-Hardware

TPHH01 | 2 days
Formerly True H: Hardware Project Planning & Control

The ability to accurately predict the cost of new or modified hardware items is crucial to those who produce these items and for those who procure them. TruePlanning®-Hardware provides the capability to quickly estimate the cost to develop, produce, and maintain hardware projects of any scale-from the smallest module, to assemblies, to entire systems, and even to System of Systems.

This two-day workshop provides instruction in developing Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates using TruePlanning®-Hardware for early concept analysis when technical definition is incomplete or vague, as well as detailed estimates when the design concept is more mature. In addition, the student will learn how to appropriately capture Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) hardware components in an estimate, create a life cycle cost estimate that captures operations and support cost elements, and perform uncertainty analysis.

Pre-requisite: completion of True Planning®-Systems training or a thorough understanding of the TruePlanning® framework is a pre-requisite for this class.

Software Lifecycle Project Planning & Control

TruePlanning®-Software

TPSS01 | 2 days
Formerly True S: Software Project Planning & Control
This course is PMI-Certified; students will receive 32 PDUs upon completion.

This two-day workshop is intended for software engineers, project managers, cost estimators, cost and research analysts, and development engineering staff members who need to develop and evaluate resource estimates for software application development projects. The student will learn how to develop both Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates using just a handful of inputs as well as detailed estimates when the software requirements and architecture is better defined.

The TruePlanning®-Software workshop also addresses software maintenance effort, showing students how to generate a complete life cycle cost estimate. Also included is a discussion of how to adequately estimate the unique activities of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) implementation efforts. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the software estimating process and the key cost drivers of software development, the student will learn various software sizing measures.

Pre-requisite: completion of TruePlanning®-Systems training or a thorough understanding of the TruePlanning® framework is a pre-requisite for this class.

PRICE Software (PRICE S)

PESSS1 | 4 days

Software project development cost drivers (such as size and functional complexity) are used to introduce students to PRICE S. During this four-day workshop, students will acquire the ability to estimate the costs and schedules of software development projects using PRICE S. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the input parameters that influence software costs, comprehend how to analyze the output reports, and learn about alternative software sizing measures. Instruction is also provided in how to generate life-cycle cost estimates that address software maintenance, enhancement, and growth. Finally, the students will learn how to apply the principles of risk analysis to develop probabilistic estimates.

TruePlanning®-COCOMO

TPCO01 | 2 days
Formerly True COCOMO

COCOMO II, developed by the University of Southern California's Center for Software Engineering, is a popular and widely-used cost model for estimating software development projects. In this two-day workshop, the student will learn both the Early Concept and Post-Architecture sub-models of COCOMO II. Students will quickly recognize the benefits of employing the attributes of the TruePlanning®-COCOMO catalog with the added features and capabilities of the TruePlanning® framework.
