In 1926, Nikola Tesla said, “When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole…. And the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry it in his vest pocket.” This notion of the earth being converted into a huge brain sounds a lot like where we’re going with the Network (Internet) of Things (NoT/IoT). The IoT is the worldwide network of intelligent objects that are interconnected and uniquely representable on the basis of communication based protocols.

The building blocks of the IoT are sensors, networks and services. It represents the third generation in the evolution of the World Wide Web (WWW) – browser based internet usage, social media internet usage, Internet of Things.
The Network of Things proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to address the problem that, “There is no formal, analytic or even descriptive set of building blocks that govern the operation, trustworthiness and lifecycle of IoT components. In other words, NIST is proposing a vocabulary to put IoT and NoT conversations and analyses on common ground based on foundational science derived from the belief that NoT involves – sensing, computing, communication and actuation. IoT is an instantiation of a NoT.
IoT/NoTs are enabled by existent and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, edge computing, micro data centers, fog computing, cloudlets, and micro data centers. The IoT is being used all over the world to improve retail and consumer experiences enabling those with things to sell to appeal directly and personally to those who want to buy. This technology has and will continue to enable smart cities, autonomous vehicles, smart homes, smart street lights to name just a few.
